Anatoly V. Torkunov
Rector of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) since 1992, Russian political analyst, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In 1972 graduated from the Faculty of International Relations of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, completed post-graduate studies at the Department of History and Culture of Asian and African countries. While studying, he was simultaneously teaching and was appointed Associate Editor in 1974. 1977 – defended a thesis on Evolvement and Development of the Military and Bureaucratic Regime in South Korea (1961 – 1976), PhD in History. 1979 – Associate Professor. 1977-1983 – Senior Teacher, Associate Professor at the Department of History and Culture of Asian and African countries, Dean of Foreign Student Relations, Provost for International Relations.
1983-1986 – served as a diplomat – Second, then First Secretary at the USSR Embassy in USA. 1989 – First Provost of the Moscow Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). 1992 – promoted to professor. 1992 – elected as President of MGIMO at the General Stuff Meeting.1995 – defended a thesis, Doctor of Political Sciences.
Initiated modernization of the educational process and structural reform of the Institute. Under his leadership MGIMO received status of a university. 1997 – re-elected as President of MGIMO. 2003 –corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2008 – full member. 1993 – awarded diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. 1997 – member of the Collegium of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian federation. 2008 – Editor-in-Chief of the “Vestnik MGIMO-University” magazine.
Chairman of the United Nations Association of Russia, President of the Russian Association of International Research, member of the Academic Council under Security Council of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Academic Methodological Association of Universities specializing in International Relations.
