Yelena Karnaukhova: Understanding “the new Great Game” in Central Asia allows to view the region in a pragmatic way

When reading news headlines about recent events somehow associated with the countries of Central Asia, we cannot help remembering the famous phrase of British writer Rudyard Kipling: “Only when everyone dies, the Great Game will be over”. The concept of “the Great Game” was invented in the 1830s by British office Arthur Conolly. Kipling used the beautiful metaphor in his novel “Kim” to describe the great-power competition between the Russian and British empires in Central Asia.
