The roundtable of Russian and Chinese scientists in Heihe. Opinions and comments
On November 2, a delegation of Russian scientists participated in a roundtable together with colleagues from Beijing and Harbin, who specialize in Russian regional studies, in the border town of Heihe. That discussion was organized by the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund together with (BSPU).
The meeting was opened by Vice President of Heihe University Sun Liu Zuang. In his welcome message, he noted importance of the first experience of holding a joint conference with the Gorchakov Fund.
Consul General of the Russian Federation in Shanghai Sergey Paltov also addressed the attendees. He mentioned significance of the event not only from the point of view of participation of scientists from Moscow and St. Petersburg, but also professionals from Blagoveshchensk, a border town with China.
The session “Security and Cooperation in APR” was opened by Associate Professor of the American Studies Department of St. Petersburg State University Dr. Yana Leksyutina. In her report “Security in APR within the framework of the rise of China”, she listed a number of challenges facing the countries of the region.
Head of the Department of Regional Integration of Russian APEC Study Center Tatyana Flegontova presented her report “Integrational architecture in APR: opportunities for inter-block cooperation”. She told about potential for cooperation, initiatives on coupling of the EEU and the New Silk Road, existing challenges and possible ways of overcoming them.
Head of the School of Asian Studies of the Research National University Higher School of Economics Professor Dr. Alexey Maslov spoke about potential for cooperation between Russia and China in the field of education during the session “Human Dimensions of Russian-Chinese Relations”. According to him, 167 universities teach Chinese in Russia, which is a larger number than in Great Britain or the U.S. “Russia is the most teaching country of Chinese in the world”, the scientist believes.
The meeting was closed by the session “Energy Industry, Infrastructure Objects, Business. Coupling of the EEU and the Silk Road”. A report on integration processes based on the examples of BRICS and SCO was made by Deputy Executive Director of the Institute of International Relations of Beijing University Professor Guang Guyxai.
