04 May 2018

On April 22-27, the III Pyatigorsk International Model United Nations was organized at the premises of the Institute of International Relations of Pyatigorsk State University with the support of the Gorchakov Fund and the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs.

During the period of six months the Secretariat and the Presidium were establishing conditions for productive activities. Meetings were held within the framework of nine committees in five working languages of the UN: Russian, English, French, Spanish and Arabic. Participants were developing their skills of diplomatic service and command of foreign languages.

Within the framework of the Pyatigorsk Model UN the students were simulating activities of the bodies of the United Nations. The participants of the Model UN – delegates, chairmen, observers and experts – were acting as official representatives of the UN member states and members of international organizations and were discussing items on the agenda of their committees. During the event, the delegates were defending official positions of the countries represented by them. The final goal of each committee was to adopt a resolution on the matter under discussion.

In addition to the meetings held in the form of a business game, the participants had a unique opportunity to attend lectures read by respected experts in the field of foreign affairs: Dr. Stanislav Chernyavsky (Director of the Center for Post-Soviet Studies at MGIMO, Director of the Institute of International Studies at MGIMO, Professor at the Department of Global Political Processes of MGIMO, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the 2nd class) and Dr. Alexey Fenenko (Associate Professor at the Department of International Security of the Faculty of World Politics at Lomonosov Moscow State University).

Journalists, who represented the Committee on Information, were also present at the Model UN. Three news agencies were covering the most interesting moments of the committees’ meetings throughout the event and even became initiators of a press conference in case of a conflict between the countries. The agencies were involved in a real media war. Based results of their activities a winner, which managed to outperform its competitors in providing the most current and quality information, was selected.

Meanwhile, the other committees were holding meetings according to their agenda. The Economic and Social Council, where the meetings were held in Russia, was discussing global climate change and conservation in the interests of future and current generations. The problem of securing the common right to education was raised at UNESCO also in Russian.

At the Human Rights Council (working language – Russian) the agenda included protection of women’s rights in the modern world. The History Committee, where meetings were also held in Russian, became a discovery of this Model – the delegates were imitating the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg.

Meetings of the First Committee of the General Assembly were held in English. The delegates were able to adopt a resolution on prevention of arms race in space.

Last year the Security Council was working in English and in 2018 the working language of the UN was Arabic. It should be mentioned that it consisted completely of foreigners, who were discussing easing of tensions in regards to nuclear missile activities of North Korea.

Members of the Fourth Committee of the General Assembly were speaking Spanish during the whole week. The working agenda of the meetings included national self-determination in the modern world. The International Labour Organization was evaluating the problem of equality between migrants and local population in securing jobs in French. An interpreter provided assistance to certain delegates.

The best member was selected in each committee by secret ballot. All the winners received memorable gifts.

At the end of the Model UN, Historic Dancing Party was organized, where everyone had an opportunity to go back in time and dance quadrille or polonaise.
