29 May 2017

On May 29, scientific conference “The Civil War in Spain and Soviet Contribution: 80 Years After” was opened on Mundet Campus of the University of Barcelona.

The Gorchakov Fund sponsored participation of the delegation of Russian scientists in the forum.

Latest studies of relations between the USSR and republican Spain in such areas as diplomacy and politics, financial and humanitarian aid, support and military consultations will be presented at the conference organized by Research Group Teaching and Learning Heritage, Museum Studies and New Technologies (DIDPATRI) of the University of Barcelona and the Association of Aviators of the Republic (ADAR).

According to the organizers, there is much information in Russia on those topics collected in the archives of several institutions. Academicians from Belgorod University, Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow State Institute of International Relations and the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History will attend the conference. The organizers aim at establishing cooperation between historians from Russian and local universities in order to exchange knowledge and experience.

As it was mentioned by Director of the conference – instructor at the University of Barcelona David Iniges, children and grandchildren of the Soviet pilots, who were defending Spain as volunteers, will tell their family stories during a session with Spanish and Russian historians. This, he stressed, will allow going deep into the topic, which is “unknown and unstudied, still covered with stereotypes and myths”.

The conference will end on May 31.
