The Foreign Affairs Week. Articles and comments by attendees of the Academy of Journalism “Kommersant”

05 August 2015

On July 6-10, Russian media giant "Kommersant" and the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund acquired positive experience of business cooperation while jointly holding the Foreign Affairs Week at the Academy of Journalism established by the publishing house.

Participants of the program developed a large number of publications based on its results – reports, comments and interviews.

In 2015, the Academy of Journalism “Kommersant” is cooperating with the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund for the first time. The Fund specializes in providing support to Russian non-governmental organizations, participating in foreign policy, and in cooperation with journalists from different countries, who cover relations of their states with Russia.

Due to cooperation between the organizations, the attendees of the Academy were able to meet colleagues from neighboring countries – Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine – and discuss problems of modern journalism with them.

The year 2015 is part of a fantastically interesting period for study of international relations, the first speaker, who presented to the participants of the program, expert and editor-in-chief of the magazine “Russia in Global Politics” Fyodor Lukyanov believes.

Journalists, dealing with international topics, are also going through a period of development of their profession: the world is opening borders and simultaneously changing their contours.

Unfortunately, news in global politics today is often related to military conflicts. Lectures made by Deputy Head of the Foreign Affairs Unit of the newspaper “Kommersant” Maksim Yusin and special correspondent of the Publishing House “Kommersant” Ilya Baranbanov focused on professional coverage and code of conduct of a journalist in a war.

The audience and the speakers talked a lot about relations between Russia and the US during the Foreign Affairs Week. After the end of the cold war the countries were not able to reach common ground on its results, and this is one of the reasons contributing to ongoing confrontation, Chairman of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev explained to the participants. A meeting with the senator took place in the building of the Federation Council on Bolshaya Dmitrovka.

Participants and leadership of the Academy of Journalism “Kommersant” express thanks to the Gorchakov Fund and believe that cooperation will continue and many productive geopolitical discussions and educational lectures within the framework of joint programs will be held.

Work of other participants of the Academy of Journalism “Kommersant” can be accessed in the “Library of a Public Diplomat” on the official website of the Gorchakov Fund.
