The first meeting of the Russian-Romanian Commission took place at the Diplomatic Academy

On February 18, 2019 the first meeting of the Russian-Romanian Commission on Public Diplomacy and Scientific-Cultural Dialogue was held at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. The Commission had been formed in October of 2019 during the conference, dedicated to the 140th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Russia and Romania.

The Russian side of the Commission was represented by officials from the Diplomatic Academy of the MFA of Russia, the Fourth European Department of the MFA of Russia, Federal Agency “Rossotrudnichestvo”, the Civic Chamber of Russia and top institutions of the Academy of Sciences of Russia – the Institute of Europe, the Institute of World History and the following NGOs – International Public Fund “Russian Peace Foundation”, the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund and the Russkiy Mir Foundation. The Romanian side was represented by the Center of Foreign Policy and Security Studies, the Academy of Economic Studies, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi  and the European Institute of Risk, Security and Communication Management.

The First Vice-Rector of the Diplomatic Academy of the MFA of Russia Tatiana Zakaurtseva and member of the Civic Chamber of Russia Elena Sutormina welcomed the participants and emphasized importance of scientific and public diplomacy in modern international relations.

Co-Chairman of the Commission from the Russian side Nina Maslakova-Klauberg mentioned significance of participation of scientific and cultural communities as well as of general public in development of the Russian-Romanian political dialogue. Florin Pasatou, Co-Chairman of the Commission from the Romanian side, expressed an opinion that work of the Commission could help to normalize general atmosphere of cooperation under complex Russia-Romanian relations.

During the meeting of the Commission, the Plan of Actions of the Commission for 2019 was developed, which included international conferences, symposia, lectures and youth exchanges. The parties agreed to publish joint collection of articles “Russia and Romania in the 19th Century: Modern Approaches to New Challenges and Threats”. The next meeting of the Commission will take place in the second half of 2019.

On November 19, 2019 the Romanian delegation visited the History Center of the Russian Diplomatic Service of the MFA of Russia.
