“Serving the Muses bears no… what?”. Experience of civil service in the Russian Empire

On September 21 two famous poets were born: in 1708 – Prince Antioch Kantemir and in 1760 – Ivan Dmitriev.

We should note that besides literary talents both of them were prominent politicians: Kantemir – Ambassador to London and Paris, and Dmitriev – Minister of Justice. The same post at a different time was held by Gavrila Derzhavin. He was also President of the Collegium of Commerce and State Secretary of Catherine II.
