Congratulations to the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS with its 200th anniversary!
On October 29, 2018 the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences is celebrating its 200th anniversary.
The institute was founded in St. Petersburg as an Asiatic Museum under the Imperial Academy of Sciences and already in the 18th century it attained international fame as one of the largest centers of complex studies of Asia and North Africa. Truly remarkable archeologists and ethnographers, experts in ancient texts written in modern and dead oriental languages as well as religion scholars worked there.
In the 20th century the fame of the Institute continued to grow as the number of its departments and research centers. A contribution made by national Orientalists into popularization of science about the East is invaluable.
During different years the Institute was headed by world famous scientists. In 1977-1985 it was headed by well-known Soviet and Russian politician and diplomat Yevgeny Primakov.
The Gorchakov Fund congratulates the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS with its anniversary! We thank our colleagues from the Institute and, personally, its Director, Professor Valery Androsov and its Scientific Director, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vitaly Naumkin for their attention to activities of the Fund and participation in our events.
