1957-1960 – research officer, senior research officer, attaché of the News Department of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 1960-1066 – interpreter, employee of the UN Secretariat. 1966-1970 – Second, then First Secretary of the Secretariat of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Andrei A. Gromyko. 1970-1983 – First Secretary, Counsellor, Consul Ambassador of the USSR in the USA. According to American publication Biographic Annual, “during the 13 years of his career at the Soviet Embassy in Washington, DC Bessmertnykh turned into an exemplary diplomat, who skillfully represented his country”. 1983-1986 – Chief of the USA Department, member of the Collegium of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 1986-1988 – USSR Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs to Eduard Shevarnadze. 1988-1990 – USSR First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. 1990-1991 – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USSR in the USA. 1990-1991 – member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
