Vagit Y. Alekperov

President, Member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Management Board of OAO Lukoil, has been heading the company since its creation in 1993 and is one of its largest shareholders.

Since 2000 – member of the Management Board of Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP). In March 2012 – was rated by Forbes magazine as the 56th richest person in the world with a net worth of $13.5 billion.  Doctor of Economic Sciences, defended a thesis on “Creating Conditions and Providing Sustainable Development of Vertically Integrated Oil Companies”.

1968 – was hired as a drilling operator in the production association Kasmorneft. While working, he was studying at the evening department. 1974 – graduated fr om the Azerbaijan Oil and Chemistry Institute with a major in “Mining Engineering - Technology and Complex Mechanization of Oil and Gas Fields Development”. 1979 – was appointed Head of Oilfield and was assigned by the Party to western Siberia where he held positions in the production associations Surgutneftegas and Bashneft. 1987 – was appointed General Director of the production association Kogalymneftegas. 1990 – Deputy Minister, USSR Ministry of Oil and Gas 1991 – First Deputy Minister, USSR Ministry of Oil and Gas 1991 – was appointed head of the newly created state oil concern Langepasneftegas (later Lukoil), which consolidated assets of Langepasneftegas, Urayneftegas and Kogalymneftegas in the Khanty-Mansijsk Autonomous District. Since then Mr. Alekperov has been a permanent leader of this company, which changed its name in 1993 after going public to OAO Oil Company LUKOIL (the name consists of the first letters of constituent companies and the English word “oil”).

1997 – Forbes magazine for the first time included Vagit Alekperov in its world’s ranking of billionaires with a net worth of $1.4 billion, in 2008 his net worth was already $13 billion.
