The Caucasus Dialogue – 2017. Day 1. Geopolitical processes, media policy and the role of public diplomacy
On July 4, the Caucasus Dialogue – 2017 was launched at Pyatigorsk State University.
Participants were welcomed by Assistant to Presidential Envoy to North Caucasian Federal District of the Russian Federation Tatyana Shershneva, Director of the Institute of International Relations of Pyatigorsk State University Victor Panin and Advisor to Executive Director of the Gorchakov Fund Valery Kantorov.
Modern geopolitical processes and economic cooperation in the Caucasus region were discussed during the first working session. Associate Professor of the Department of International Relations, Political Science and Economics of the Institute of International Relations at PSU, member of the Valdai Club Maxim Suchkov made a presentation on this topic.
In the course of the discussion, the participants mentioned inefficiency of the common sociocultural model in the Caucasus. The young experts believe that every country should offer its own mechanisms of resolving regional problems.
Executive Director of ARB 24 TV channel (Azerbaijan) Nadir Shafiyev, Head of the Department of Journalism, Public Relations and Conflictology of the Institute of International Relations at PSU Irina Rumachik and Associate Professor of the Department of Conflictology, Public Relations and Journalism of the Institute of International Relations at PSU Svetlana Anufriyenko discussed a need for coordination of the common media space with the participants.
The experts paid special attention to the topic of stereotyped thinking and an opportunity to develop the common media policy in covering terrorism. The young experts tried answering the question what should the common media policy represent: consensus or the truth. They will attempt finding the answer to this question during the following working days of the program.
The last session was dedicated to the role of public diplomacy in the Caucasus. Head of the Department of Political Science of Russian-Armenian (Slavic) University of Armenia Oganes Sarkisyan, Director of the Institute of International Relations at PSU Victor Panin and Head of Administration for International Relations, Political Science and World Economics at PSU Victor Mishin took part in the panel discussion.
The program of the first working day was finished by senior researcher of the Center of Global Problems at the Institute of International Research of MGIMO (U) under MFA of Russia Alexey Tokarev. He held intellectual quiz “Jeopardy”, during which the participants were able to check their erudition and knowledge of the Caucasus region.
